There are several language tests administered in countries around the world to test English proficiency. Each test has its specific purpose, with migration, employment and university admission being the most common.
One of the most popular is the IELTS, which stands for International English Language Testing System. This exam tests your English proficiency for academic and employment capacity in countries where English is used as a mode of communication. It is recognized by thousands of organizations around the world.
The IELTS is also a requirement for qualifying to study in universities in the United Kingdom, so if you have your sights on studying there, then it’s best to get ready for the IELTS.
There are two types of IELTS, and you need to choose one based on what you will be doing. The two types are the Academic and the General Training.
IELTS Academic

This type of IELTS exam assesses whether the candidate’s English proficiency is fit for an academic environment. This is the test you will need to take in order to qualify for education abroad, specifically the UK.
IELTS General Training

This one assesses your ability to use English in general, everyday situations. It also tests your proficiency for workplace and social situations.
If you’re planning to work in the UK, your employer might require you to take this test.
How is IELTS different from other English language tests?

The IELTS mainly differs from other English language tests depending on the purpose for taking the particular examination. Other popular English language tests are the TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
TOEFL

Similar to the IELTS, it is used as an admission requirement for universities, however it is recognized in Canada, the US, and other English-speaking countries. It is also a requirement for some government agencies and licensing bodies.
The TOEFL has a validity of two years, which means you will need a reassessment once the said time has lapsed.
TESOL

This exam is specifically for those who will teach English to students whose native tongue is not English. This is a requirement if you want to be employed as an English teacher in certain schools around the world.
If you plan to work or study in the UK, it might be necessary for you to take the IELTS. You can learn more about how to prepare for exams like this here.
