Your vocabulary is essential when it comes to communicating with other English speakers thus expanding your vocabulary is also essential for you to understand many of them.
- Always find time to read!
Reading will always be your constant activity when you want to have a deeper understanding or knowledge when it comes to vocabulary. Reading will force you to encounter words that will be unfamiliar to you and you should take the chance to get to know more about the word itself. Reading will also allow you to gain other ways to use words that you already know because some of the words we know can mean another other than its usual definition.
- Take note of the words you don’t understand
Notes come in handy, not only in school notes or even the minutes of a business meeting but they are also handy for a more casual use such as keeping track of the words you don’t understand. Along with reading, when you come across difficult words immediately take note of it so you could look for the meaning.
- Use the Dictionary or Thesaurus
The dictionary and the thesaurus are your best friends when you want to learn new words. The dictionary allows you to tap on the etymology, definition and pronunciation of the word. On the other hand, the thesaurus will give you synonyms and antonyms of a certain word.
- Engage in conversations
Sure conversations are scary if you don’t understand a word a person is saying but it’s necessary for you to learn more about English. Conversations usually give you a way to know how words can be used in conversational sentences. Don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t understand a word! It’s better to be clear rather than to guess what the meaning of the word they’re using.
- Learn a new word every day
It’s a bit cliché but like what the saying says “Learn something new every day”. One word a day isn’t much but if you do it every day you will begin to see the fruits of your labor. You will begin to expand your knowledge when it comes to English vocabulary and you will have a lot of words you can use to communicate with people!
