English is a universal language with words that are not difficult to understand or say verbally. There may be words that might seem simple but find ourselves actually pronouncing it wrong.  Here are some of the words we should watch out for:

ALMOND

Definition: the drupaceous fruit of a small tree (Prunus dulcis synonym P. amygdalus) of the rose family with flowers and young fruit resembling those of the peach; especially: its ellipsoidal edible kernel used as a nut.

–        Merriam-Webster Dictionary

This small edible nut is commonly mispronounced as “ahl-mond” because of how it is spelled but the proper pronunciation of this word is “ah-mund”.

Here is a bowl of /ah-mund/.

OFTEN

Definition: many times: frequently

–        Merriam-Webster Dictionary

A word that we use most of the time to describe how frequent certain events are is mispronounced as “off-ten” instead of pronouncing with a silent t which is “oh-fen”.

SUITE

Definition: a group of things forming a unit or constituting a collection, such as, a group of rooms occupied as a unit

Intimidating as it may seem when you read it, people commonly mispronounce this word as “suit” like the type of clothing people wear on formal occasions. The correct pronunciation of this world is pronounced exactly like the word “sweet”.

Here’s one cozy hotel suite.

RECEIPT

Definition: a writing acknowledging the receiving of goods or money

–        Merriam-Webster Dictionary

We see this everyday, when we buy something from stores, restaurants, etc., but we also mispronounce it often. The common mispronunciation of this word is “re-ceipt” but the word is pronounced with a silent “p” which is “re-ceit”.

WEDNESDAY

Definition: the fourth day of the week

–        Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The days of the week are pronounced easily, although Wednesday is actually one misunderstood word because of how it is spelled. People commonly mispronounce this word as it is spelled but the correct pronunciation of it is – “Wenz-day”.

Wednesday is commonly-known as “Hump Day.” The week seems to go faster after it.

SACHET

Definition: a small bag or packet

–        Merriam-Webster Dictionary

This word is commonly mispronounced as if it has an evident letter “t” but the proper pronunciation of this word is “sa-shay”.

Most coffee houses offer sugar or cream in sachets.

These are only some of the words that are commonly mispronounced by many. All it takes is practice and knowledge of the word to say it properly.
